Edwin M. Smith
Edwin M. Smith, 94, passed away peacefully at the NYS Veterans' Home, Oxford, NY after a lengthy illness. He is predeceased by his wife, Elsie Steenburg Smith and granddaughter, Cindi Bosket Bixby. He is survived by his children: June (Ralph) Jump, Dearing, GA; Clyde (Martha) Smith, Guilford, NY; Edie Lind, Binghamton, NY; Nancy (Robert) Miller, Knoxville, TN; Cheryl (William) Simmons, Berkshire, NY; Dale Smith, Knoxville, TN; 17 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 17 great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are his sister, Celia Watkins, Kingsport, TN and brother-in-law, Earl D. Steenburg, Apalachin, NY. Edwin served in World War II as a sniper hunter and received the Purple Heart for injuries received during his service. He retired from Endicott Johnson Corp in 1985 where he worked as an electrician. After retiring he enjoyed working in his garden and lawn. At the veterans' home he enjoyed sitting in their garden and watching the hummingbirds.
At his request, there will be no calling hours. Private funeral services for the family will be held Monday, October 21, at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. Those wishing may make contributions in his memory to Newark Valley Historical Society, PO Box 222, Newark Valley, NY 13811.
