Obituary of Jean B Holmes
Jean B. Holmes, R.N.
Of West Corners
Jean Birmingham Holmes, 78, passed away at her home on Saturday morning, April 21, 2007. She is survived by her loving family, her husband of almost 57 years, Robert Holmes; one daughter and four sons and their spouses, Sharon and Bruce Phipps, Gary and Emma Holmes, Michael and Sheila Holmes, Roger and Shirley Holmes, and Jesse and Paige Holmes; ten grandchildren, Jeremiah Holmes, Shari and Jeremy Bell, Monica and Rick Gagne, Staci and Philip Gardner, Heather and Robert Spivey, Jessica and Mark Hathaway, Anthony Holmes; Jessie Holmes, Andrew Holmes and Daniel Holmes; five great-grandchildren, Bailey Gagne, Maddi Gardner, Daniel Spivey, Shawn Spivey and Paris Spivey and two great-grandchildren who will be born this summer. Jean and Bob were high school sweethearts and she often spoke about her time as a high school cheerleader as she cheered for Bob who was on the varsity basketball team. Jean graduated from Plattsburg State Teachers College in 1950 with a four year degree in nursing, at a time when very few registered nurses obtained baccalaureate degrees. She worked as a school nurse teacher for the Union-Endicott Schools and also for many years as a nursing supervisor for Willow Point Nursing Home and the former Endicott Nursing Home. Some of her very best friends were her college classmates who have been a great source of support and encouragement, especially over the last seven years as she battled and survived Lung cancer. Jean is adored by her family who will always miss her and love her. She lost her own mother, Mary Bainer Birmingham, to cancer 62 years ago, and her surviving family takes comfort in knowing they are now together again. We thank God for the blessings she brought into our lives. Over the last seven years, Jean reached out to her family and friends through letters, and in 2004 she wrote, May you always have an angel by your side Watching out for you Helping you believe in brighter days and in all dreams come true Giving you courage and comfort Someone to catch you if you fall Inspiring smiles Holding you hand and helping you through it all May you always have an angel by your side.
