Obituary of Eleanor B Zittel
Eleanor Barbara Mertel Zittel Eleanor Barbara Mertel Zittel died peacefully and unexpectedly on June 16. She was born August 28, 1912 in Buffalo to Bertha and Andrew Mertel and married to E. Henry Zittel in 1937. Her parents, husband, and two brothers, Edward and Ralph, predeceased her. She is survived by a daughter, Janet Z. Denman and son-in-law, William A. Denman of Endwell; three grandchildren, Timothy (Jennifer) Place of Murfreesboro, NC, Stephen (Rachel) Place of New York City, and Jennifer Place of Endicott; as well as five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Eleanor was an active volunteer at Salem Lutheran Church and Amherst Lutheran Church (Buffalo's area churches), teaching Sunday School, serving on Church Council and Women's Groups. She continued volunteer activities for several decades at the Niagara Lutheran Health Center as a Red Cross Nurses' Aide. She was a charter member and former president of the Women's Guild and received their special volunteer honor in 1991. She moved to Hilltop Retirement Center, Johnson City in 2003 and joined Our Savior Lutheran Church. She especially enjoyed her family and friends, gardening, playing bridge and dancing! She served as a role model for Christian living. A Memorial Service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Endwell at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. At Eleanor's request, there will be no visiting hours. There will be a graveside burial in the Prospect Lawn Cemetery, Hamburg, NY at 2:00 on Saturday afternoon. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Niagara Lutheran Health Center Foundation, 64 Hager St., Buffalo, NY 14208; Our Savior Lutheran Church, 731 Hooper Rd., Endwell, NY 13760; or Hilltop Retirement Center, 286 Deyo Hill Rd., Johnson City, NY 13790.
