My Uncle, C. Gerald “Jerry” Steele, was an intellectually gifted man of quiet integrity and faithfulness.
We all enjoyed the annual Thanksgiving dinners together at Grandpa and Grandma’s. Occasionally those evenings he would play old short movies of Charlie Chaplin, Abbot and Costello, or others in his collection.
When I was young he seemed a very tall man with a playful, little smile that surfaced when he knew he had made us all laugh. I admire how consistently he visited Grandpa & Grandma; virtually every day over the years until they passed on. His favorite pet, was his horse, Babe. He loved to share interesting details of the many road trips he and his family made.
The times he prayed with and for us were each a blessing. His faith was so genuine that it made his prayers a confirmation and encouragement of our own faith. Our family has lost a great treasure who has benefited us all. Our appreciation and condolences to Blanche and her family for the shared loss of this wonderful man.

I met “Jerry” back on Memorial Day in 1970 when I started dating his daughter Frances. I remember that I was in the Air Force at the time and when I left to go back to my base, he would always say a prayer for my safe travels. That tradition continued on, through, and after Fran and I were married and were moving all over the countryside for my work. He also enjoyed wood working and made several pieces of furniture for us over the years, some of which are still in our house today.
I remember the happy times we had when the four of us (Jerry, Fran’s mother, Fran, and I) drove from our home to Texas so I could meet Fran’s mother’s family. I especially remember the time we spent on that trip waiting to get into Graceland. Both he and I could have gone without that stop, but both Fran and her mother were excited to go.
I also remember the time Jerry and I spent looking at the photos he had and talking about his days in the Air Force and his time in France. I will miss those times.

C. Gerald “Jerry” Steel was my father and has now rejoined my mother, Frances Sue, the love of his life and my brother Paul, forever in heaven. He was a strict and religious man throughout my brother’s and my upbringing. He regularly attended church and provided us and others with his prayers.
I remember all of the good things he had done for us while we grew up and the enjoyment he felt when driving around the country to visit distant relatives and to see the beautiful sites like the Grand Canyon. I remember the trip we all took to visit my mother’s family in Texas and her Grandmother who lived on the Indian reservation in Oklahoma. His enjoyment of travel continued for years and he made sure to visit Jeff and me as we were transferred around the country. He was never able to make it to our current home following the passing of my mother. We will miss him.
