Obituary of Robert P. Merritt
Robert Merritt, of Apalachin, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2022, surrounded by his loving wife and sons. Bob was the son of Paul and Mae Merritt, who predeceased him. He grew up in Ossining, New York. He attended SUNY Oswego, where he was awarded a degree in Physics and was employed by Honeywell, where he worked for over 35 years before retiring. Along with many friends and family, Bob is survived by his wife, "Miss" Maureen Furiosi, his sons, Rick Merritt of Raleigh, North Carolina, and David Merritt of Binghamton, New York, his Stepson James Furiosi of East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, and his stepdaughter Cara (Nicholas) Clarke of Burdett, New York. Bob had an infectious laugh and was an excellent listener. He loved music, especially playing the pedal steel guitar with his band Slideways. He was a huge fan of Crosby, Stills and Nash, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. Many people, near and far, enjoyed live music at his annual barn party on his old farm in Apalachin. Bob was a good steward of the earth and spent a lot of time in the woods on his property. He loved to hike in the Adirondacks, go out on his sailboat and vacation at Mirror Lake and on Block Island. Bob's passing has left a void in many of our hearts. He cast a large net but was unassuming and always humble. He was so easy to love but incredibly hard to lose.
