I am sorry to find out Prof Chianis has passed. Because of him, I know what a Gamelan is (Javanese orchestra), because of Prof Chianis what instruments like sitahi, tabla, baglama, and bouzouki are. I was one of his first students when Prof Chianis joined the staff at Harpur college. Being a foreign student from Ghana and playing the the jembe and Donno drums, he wanted me to continue taking music courses, but my interest was in physics chemistry and mathematics. After two course with professor Chianis, I turned my attention to the science; but every concert that Prof Chianis staged on campus, I tried to go.
May his soul rest in perfect peace.

I will always remember you, Sam! I can't thank you enough for your life, your dedication, all you gave me while studying with you at Binghamton...you were my first mentor and all that you taught me has always remained with me...it always will...I still remember so many conversations, what you shared in your classes...you were the reason I moved to Binghamton to study with you...thank you so much for encouraging and steering me in the right direction to work on your collection of Greek songs for the thesis....the sharing of some of your tapes from your recording trips to Greece...the great time we had in your Greek dance troupe with everyone (will always remember the times, especially to Pennsylvania), the weekly dance sessions...your hospitality on Skyros...you were so special and your presence such a great gift at the university!!...I will always remember you...always in my heart!

I studied Ethnomusicology with Sam at Binghamton University from 1968 - 1972. His teachings of music cultures has remained with me my whole life. I danced in his Greek Folk Dance Class and group. We danced at various colleges in New England too. I learned to play the cimbalom while at Binghamton and will never forget the utmost joy in learning Greek music. This led to learning more music of other cultures, Balkan, music of Java (the Gambalon), Indian ethnic music. I visited with Sam and Ulga in 2014 and we were able to chat and enjoy those early years for him at Binghamton. I am saddened to hear of his passing, but will always remember and honor those years of his teaching. Stephanie (Zunno) Girellini

Stephanie,
Thank you for your kind words. I remember you. It is always nice to hear about the impact that he left on others over the years, and how he shaped the lives and future of his students. He certainly dedicated his whole life to both music and teaching, with the goal of sharing knowledge. I am happy to know that you were part of his world. Thank you!

Hemanth Posted Apr 19, 2022 at 9:10 AM
My name is Hemanth. I am son of Mythili Gaddam, who was his student from India (graduated in 1971). My mother came to the US last month (March 2022) and we have been trying hard to get in touch with Prof. Chianis and Mrs. Stephanie (Zunno) Girellini. I am very sorry to hear this this. My mother remembers him very fondly. She spoke very high of him throughout my childhood. Is there a number she can call? Our sincere condolences to you all.

I was a student of Dr. Chianis in his Music Cultures of the World class in 1971. It was in Dr. Chianis class I got to love Balinese Gamelon music. Dr. Chianis was clearly a kind and very talented musician. I remember one evening his playing several Greek Instruments in a Fine Arts classroom while several students danced to his playing traditional Greek folk songs.
Although I only attended one class with Dr. Chianis, his lessons and kindness have remained with me my whole life.

My condolences to the Chianis family. I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Chianis (he always said “call me Sam” ) in the Music Department at SUNY Binghamton in 1986-87 when he was Chairman of the department. He was such a kind and gentle-spirited person. I knew he was a very talented and accomplished person, but after reading his life story, I didn’t even know 1/10 of his accomplishments. Thank you so much for sharing!! I am so glad he had such a long and prosperous life. Take care.

I was very saddened to hear of Sam's passing. He was a good friend and colleague during my teaching years at SUNY many years ago. (also one of the very few who played an albert system clarinet!). My deepest sympathies to all of you.

A true scholar and one of the kindest and most sincere people I ever knew and had the honor and the pleasure to work with. This photo was taken on the stage of Carnegie Recital Hall in November 1979 as we rehearsing for an upcoming presentation of REBETIKA music and songs - for the first time ever in this music hall. RIP my friend !!!
