Obituary of Mary Westover

Mary Etta (Mangino) Westover of Vestal, NY Mary Etta (Mangino) Westover of Vestal, NY left this earthly body on December 19, 2009, and went home to be with her precious Jesus, whom she loved dearly and served faithfully in prayer and good deeds throughout her long, fruitful life of 89 years. She was born on March 2, 1920 in Dunmore, PA, the oldest child of John and Angelina (Dileo) Mangino. She had younger siblings, Nicholas, Anthony, Carmen (Carl), Betty, and a baby sister who all predeceased her. She graduated from Dunmore High School in 1939, along with her brother, Nick, and shortly thereafter moved with her family to Endicott, NY with the prospect of finding good work at the Endicott-Johnson Shoe Factory. Mary worked in a variety of factories in the Binghamton area, including Drybacks, Eureka, Woolworths and Endicott Johnson's. She completed evening courses in Precision Measurements, Blue Print Reading and Machine Set-Up and as a result was able to get a job in IBM during World War II. She helped collect moneys for the Red Cross, gave out food and coffees to the boys heading to the war effort, and wrote countless letters of encouragement to the GIs. After the war she continued to work at IBM, where she met her husband of 39 years, Charles H. Westover. They were married on July 15, 1950 in St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Endicott, NY. She became a homemaker, and raised their daughter, Gail A. (Westover) Fisk. She faithfully and lovingly cared for her husband through 26 years of ill health until his passing in 1989. Since then she has spent time with her grandchildren, and continued her devotion in prayer for 100's of people. In the last few years of her own ill health several aides have found her to be a ray of sunshine in their day, giving encouragement and offering prayers on their behalf. Mary was predeceased by her parents, all of her brothers and sisters, her husband, and all seven of her god-children. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gail Ann and David Fisk; her grandchildren, Jonathan and Rachel Fisk (all of Vestal, NY) and her three sisters-in-law. Mrs. Blanche Mangino (of Endicott, NY), Mrs. Bruna Warner (of Binghamton, NY) and Mrs. Erla Mangino (of Rochester, NY); as well as several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received at Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home, 765 Main St., Vestal, NY, between the hours of 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, December 22. A funeral service will also be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 23, at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Edward Lecates (of Thomasville, NC) officiating. Entombment will follow at Riverhurst Cemetery, Endicott. The family would like to express special heartfelt thanks to Dr. John Wacendak and the people of Johnson City Family Care, Ivette and other nurses therapists and aides of Twin Tier Home Health, private home health aide Chelsea Lee, and the nurses and aides of Lourdes Hospice, all of whom helped the family greatly to allow Mom the dignity of living in her own home until her death. The family also wishes to thank: the Vestal Emergency Squad, Vestal Police and UHS Emergency Room teams for the many times they provided emergency assistance over the past several years. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Lourdes Hospice, the Vestal Emergency Squad or another charity of your choice in her honor.
