Obituary of Bruce A. Edson

Bruce Adam Edson passed away unexpectedly on November 2nd, 2022, at Wilson Medical Center. He was predeceased by his parents, Roger and Rosamund Edson, his brother James Edson and his sister-in-law Carole Lucas. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years and best friend, JoAnne, his cherished and devoted children, Amy Costable, Vestal NY and Brent Edson, Chantilly, VA and his grandsons Sheldon and Bradey Costable. Also, his brother-in-law, John Lucas, Sacramento CA, many nieces and nephews, cousins and lifelong friends Shirley and Andy Zeidler, Manchester CT. Bruce graduated from Windsor High in 1961, and worked at Pratt and Whitney in East Hartford, CT where he met his wife, JoAnne. After serving in the US Army in Germany he returned to complete his studies at University of Connecticut where he received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. Bruce joined the IBM Corporation in Endicott in 1971 as an Engineer. His outstanding career spanned over 30 years as he held several management positions culminating at the Executive Level. He and his teams were instrumental in the design of several successful computer processor systems. Bruce was dedicated not only to the technical challenges of his work, but also felt a passionate concern for the well-being and career of every person that worked for him. During reorganizations he worked tirelessly to find jobs in Endicott or at other IBM sites for many of his people. Bruce was a mentor and good friend to many members of his team. Bruce was a true automotive enthusiast. In his early years he raced cars competitively in the northeast including Lime Rock and Watkins Glen raceways. He attended F1 races in Canada and US and enjoyed watching the races with his son and grandsons on TV. Bruce loved all sports and he coached and participated in soccer and baseball. He enjoyed running and at one point was a competitive runner sharing that with his daughter. Bruce and JoAnne, both as UConn alum, were avid UConn women's basketball fans and attended over 15 women's final fours across the county. Bruce and JoAnne traveled extensively each winter in their RV enjoying adventure, fine dining, elegant wine and golf. They played many of the top 100 ranked courses and he notched two hole-in-ones. Bruce and his family spent many years at their cottage on Cayuga Lake, fishing and canoeing inspired by his time as an Eagle Scout as he loved the outdoors. The family will receive friends Friday, November 11th from 5 to 7 PM at Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home, 765 Main St. Vestal, NY. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM on Saturday November 12th at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Vestal, NY, followed by a luncheon. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Humane Society in memory of Bruce and his lifelong love of animals, birds and beloved current dog Palmer.
