Obituary of Richard A. Gorr

Richard Allan Gorr, 87, born in St. Paul, MN passed away on February 3, 2023 at Willow Point Nursing Home, Vestal, NY. He was predeceased by his father Alvin W. Gorr, mother Ethel Hathaway, and his brother DeWayne Gorr. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Barbara Gorr (Benedict), son Stephen (MaryEllen) Gorr, daughter Kathy (John) Gavula, grandchildren Nicholas (Holly) Gorr, Jennifer (Justin) Wilbur, great granddaughters Emma and Maddison Wilbur, niece Caryn Meyer (Gorr), nephew Gary Gorr, brother-in-law Ray Barnard, niece Laura (Michael) Barnard Corson, and cousins Virgil Hathaway and Warren Hathaway. Richard graduated in 1954 from South Kitsap High in Port Orchard, Washington, then moved to St. Paul, MN to attend the University of Minnesota before joining the US Marine Corps. He served as a mechanic aboard C130 Transport planes out of Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, NC. He reached the rank of Sargant flying many trips to Europe before retiring. He was very proud of being a Marine. He met Barbara in July 1957 at Atlantic Beach, NC, before being sent overseas. They kept in touch during his deployment and later married in December 1958. They decided to live and raise their family in Binghamton, NY where Barbara grew up. Richard joined the US Postal Service as well as working many small side jobs throughout the years. He retired from the US Postal Service after 30+ years. Richard was an avid bowler and golfer participating in many leagues throughout the years. He loved to sing which led him to join the German Club and the Vestal Community Chorus. Richard loved and was very proud of his family showing his numerous pictures to anyone who would look. He loved people and people loved Richard. He was always happy and smiling. He would walk down a street and say hello to each and every person he passed with a huge smile on his face. Richard will be missed by everyone who knew him but will never be forgotten by a single person whose life he enhanced even for a short period of time. We wish to thank the Willow Point staff who took such wonderful care of him these last two years. The staff, starting at the front desk reception, to the aides, nurses, administrators, food service workers, maintenance, and housekeeping personnel were always welcoming and kind to all of us during this COVID time. They were all so compassionate and hardworking even though being extremely short-handed. We will miss you all. Thank you so much from the Gorr family.
