Obituary of Muntasir Mahmoud Labban

Dr. Muntasir Mahmoud Labban, (April 10, 1941) passed away on February 13, 2023 in Binghamton, New York, after a brief and sudden illness. Monty was born in Beirut, Lebanon, the third of six children to Mahmoud and Attieh (El Jabi) Labban. Monty immigrated to the United States in the early 1970s in search of intellectual and educational growth. Working on his PhD in Economics at Binghamton University, he met the love of his life, Cheryl, who he hired to type his dissertation. After a courtship that spanned the globe, they were married on May 16, 1975 and later that same year moved to New York City where Monty worked for the United Nations. In 1979, they welcomed their daughter, Danya Elaine Labban. In 1982, Monty's job with the International Fund for Agricultural Development took the family to Rome, Italy, where they lived until 2001. While in Italy, they hosted dinner parties with friends, traveled all over Europe and enjoyed sharing Italy with friends and family. Upon Monty's retirement in 2001, they settled down in Endwell, New York, and reconnected with family and friends. They also made countless new friends while volunteering and becoming members of the Endwell United Methodist Church, Harmony Club of Binghamton, the Antique Society, and the Rotary Club. Monty is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cheryl (Johnson); his father, Mahmoud, and mother, Attieh Labban; his brothers, Farouk and Walid Labban; his sister, Nabila Sinno; and his father and mother-in-law, Anthony and Elaine (Burgess) Johnson. He is survived by his daughter, Danya Labban, daughter-in-law, Tina Chandna and her family, grandchildren Ella and Greyson, all of New York, NY; sister, Houda Labban, and brother, Nabil Labban, of Beirut, Lebanon, and countless family and friends across the globe. Funeral services were privately held by the family. Burial is at East Maine Cemetery. Donations may be made in Monty's memory to the Children's Emergency Fund in support of the thousands of people impacted by the earthquake that struck the Turkey (Türkiye) and Syria borders.
