Obituary of Joseph Krein

Joseph Krein, 87, of Vestal, NY, died on April 17, 2023. Born in Newark, NJ, he was the eldest of the six children of Joseph and Anna Krein. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Julia Sheppard. As a youth, he was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Drum and Bugle Corps. He graduated from Irvington Technical High School and from Newark College of Engineering with a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. He attended college at night while working full time as a maintenance man at Mountainside Hospital. Joe worked for 31 years at IBM, Loral, and Lockheed Martin in Owego, NY, as an electrical engineer. After his retirement, Joe volunteered with his friend Walter Stevens, delivering Meals on Wheels to the homebound. Joe served in the U.S. Army during the period of the Korean conflict. Joe enjoyed competitive rifle shooting, long distance cycling, walking his many dogs over the years, and three meals a day at the Skylark Diner. He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Vestal where he often attended daily mass. Joe made a loving home for his mother Anna in her later years. Joe is survived by his brother John (Fran), his sister Mary Corrigan (George), his sister Cecilia Fletcher (Robert), his sister Loretta Dougherty, and many loving nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be celebrated for Joseph at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Vestal, NY, on Tuesday, May 2, at 10:30 a.m. The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of mass at 10:30 a.m. A funeral mass will also be celebrated at St. Cecelia's Church in Iselin, NJ, on Thursday, May 4, at 10:15 a.m.
