Obituary of Mary Karen Hobert

Mary Karen Hobert, 83, passed away Thursday November 30th, 2023. She went peacefully and in the hands of angels. Mary preferred to be known as Karen, and she was born on the 20th of September in 1940, as the youngest child of Donald and Rose Egan. Karen attended Saint James School, and graduated from Johnson City High School in 1958. After graduation, she and her best friend, Lucy Cole, pursued an education in Nursing. Karen found much more joy in her relationships with patients than the technical work, and so she decided to become a banker instead. It was difficult to leave Lucy, but the two never separated for long. In the early 1960s, Karen met James (Jim) Hobert, and fell in love. In 1962, Jim and Karen were married, and began building their home and family together in West Corners. They raised three children, Christopher, Richard, and Jill. While parenting, she worked as an Ed Tech for the Union Endicott School District, which satiated her love for building connections in her community. Once her children departed from home to venture into adult life, Karen and Jim began their retirement journey. Soon the couple began spending their quality time traveling the world and visiting their children and grandchildren on the East Coast. Karen was fortunate enough to visit Ireland, a place she has ancestral ties and had always dreamed of going. Once she returned, it was something she just couldn't stop talking about. She is survived by her three children Christopher (Ivonne), Richard (Christine), and Jill; her grandchildren Christopher, Ryan, Samantha and Nicholas; nieces Jerilyn, Debbie, Laura; nephews Randy, Tim and Kevin. Her family would like to extend a gracious thank you to her kind and compassionate caregivers at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford, New York. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday December 5, 2023 at 12 noon, at SS. Cyril and Methodius Church, 148 Clinton St. Binghamton, NY. The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the time of the Mass.
