Glenn Hopler

Obituary of Glenn E Hopler

On December 18, 2023, after a valiant fight against a genetic form of colon cancer, Glenn's spirit left his body to soar among the stars and learn the secrets of the Universe. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Ann, and their sons, Eric and Trevor (Allison), best friends Jon and Cyndy von Wolfersdorf, sister-in-law Carrie Hopler, brother-in-law Paul (Connie) Palmer, sisters-in-law Patricia (Randy) Ramey and Margaret (Paul) Janac and many nieces and nephews. Also, his constant companion, the best cuddling little black kitty, Spooky. He was predeceased by his parents, Edgar and Laura Hopler and his brother, Lee. Glenn was a graduate of BNHS, BCC (Chemical Technology) and State University - Oneonta (Physics, Math and Astronomy). But his education never ceased. He was well read on a wide variety of scientific topics. Blessed with intelligence, he was a member of MENSA for many years. He retired from his positions as Quality Assurance Manager and Sales Engineer after 24 years at Owego Heat Treat, Inc. when the company closed its doors due to the flood of 2011. A special thanks to Edward and Marla Engelhard for providing Glenn the opportunity to become an integral part of a high-quality Metallurgical Processing facility specializing in Military and Aerospace Specification heat treatments. He was an avid bowler for many years, with his best series coming at State Bowling Center, with games of 278, 279, and 258 for an 815 series. Glenn was especially proud of his sons' accomplishments in academics, sports and music. He delighted in watching them perform on stage together (Eric on vocals, Trevor on lead guitar) with the MTB band at Owego Free Academy. For many years, he enjoyed his motorcycles, sports cars (especially his Corvette!), RV camping with his family and good friends (where he was always the "Grill Meister") and ice cold Martinis. A special thanks to Dr. Ronald Harris, Nurse Practitioner Debra Schaffer and all the nurses and staff at Broome Oncology and UHS for their kind and compassionate care. At Glenn's request there will be no services. A celebration of life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Friends of OA Music.
