Obituary of Richard S. Chadwick
Richard S. Chadwick, 79 of Endwell peacefully passed away at home on Friday, December 29, 2023 from complications of Alzheimer's Disease. Richard was born in Queens, NY on August 1, 1944 to parents Martin Maybee and Anne Marie (Stokesberry) Chadwick.
Richard graduated from Burnt Hills Balston Lake High School in 1962. He received his Bachelor of Science from The University of Rochester in 1967 and a Masters Degree in Applied Mathematics from Binghamton University in 1972.
Richard worked at IBM/Loral/Lockheed Martin in Owego for 39 years. He worked as a Systems and Logistics Engineer, with several years in management.
Richard is survived by his dedicated wife and caregiver, Lorraine (Hardey) Chadwick, loving daughter Kristen Gentile, Scottsdale AZ, grandchildren Alex (Mel) Charlotte NC, Lauren, Albany NY, Amanda, Leadville CO, and Lucas Gentile, Baltimore MD, brothers Martin, Phoenix AZ, and Chris (Sarah), Niskayuna NY, sister Candice Peters, Dublin, OH, and several nephews and nieces. Richard was predeceased by his parents, son Rick, and sister Anne Marie Ochs (Dave).
Richard deeply loved and enjoyed every moment with his four grandchildren. Richard's favorite activity with the grandchildren was taking them to get ice cream in "The Ice-cream Car," a 1976 Cadillac Convertible. With the top down, the kids would sit on the boot, parade style, while eating their ice cream. Richard was a skilled Bridge player. He also enjoyed bowling and golf. Richard spent time camping and hiking in the Adirondacks and closer to home at Chenango Valley State Park where he and Lorraine rented a cabin for many summers with friends Dave and Mary and their daughters in the cabin next door. The grandchildren and friend's children were very close in age and became friends over the years.
Richard had been an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Endicott. He served as Warden and Vestry member. In later years, Richard and Lorraine taught high school Sunday school and co-led the senior youth group. Richard spoke most often of his service on the Furniture Ministry providing moving assistance and furniture to those in need and participating in the first Cursillo retreat in the Central NY region.
The family would like to thank those who supported Richard and Lorraine, especially Richard's caregiver and friend Henry K. During Richard's final months, Henry and Richard would go for coffee, walk on local trails and the Oakdale Commons where Richard enjoyed people watching and 'rides' in the vibrating chairs, Kathy R., Richard's hairstylist and friend for the years of caring and love she showed Richard. Even when Richard was no longer able to remember people or places once so familiar to him, he always knew and appreciated when he was being treated kindly and with love. Thank you to the Meals on Wheels delivery volunteers whose caring and kind words always warmed our hearts, especially Sue W. who connected us with Henry. We are thankful too, for friends Brad and Betsy, for their care and compassion, daily check-ins, lunches and visits, and friend and neighbor, Lisa, for running errands and her porch visits with puppy, Rudy.
A picnic and Celebration of Life will be held at the Tween Lakes Pavilion at Chenango Valley State Park on Saturday, May 25, 2024, beginning with a brief service at 12:00 followed by a picnic and time for sharing memories, horseshoes, and Bocci Ball – Richard's favorite.
