Obituary of Ferdinand F. Petras

Ferdinand F. Petras (Fred), 95, of Endwell, NY passed away on April 15, 2024 with his son, Andrew, by his side.

Fred leaves behind his children: Stephen (Carol) Petras, Ellen (Dave) Schultz, Lisa (Chris) Joseph, Andrew Petras, Amy (Jeff) Hart; his grandchildren Jennifer Creasey, Jenna, Andy and Clara Schultz, Audrey and Rachel Joseph; and great grandson Jake Creasey; and several nieces and nephews. Fred was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis Davis, his parents Stephan and Louise Petras and several brothers and sisters.

Fred was born in Binghamton, NY on August 10, 1928. He graduated from Binghamton Central High School and proudly served in the Navy during the Korean War. He then joined IBM where he worked until he retired in 1990. He continued his interest in technology by volunteering at the TechWorks! Museum in Binghamton.

Fred loved life and had many interests and hobbies. He earned his private pilots license and would take family and friends for a fly-in breakfast. He enjoyed running with his children and completed several marathons after the age of 50. He loved flyfishing on local streams, playing tennis and golfing. One of his favorite activities was having a meal with friends at a local diner.

Fred was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. In 1976, he and Phyllis took their 5 young children and a trailer on a summer trip cross-country to see America. It was the adventure of a lifetime. He loved spending time with his grandchildren going on outings and telling corny jokes.

In recent years, Elease Strauss became a close companion and brought much joy to Fred’s life.  They enjoyed reminiscing, driving around town, stopping for their favorite treat—a McDonald’s frappe!

The family would like to express their sincerest appreciation to all of Fred’s wonderful friends and neighbors for their support over the years, enriching his life and making it possible for him to stay in the home he loved.
