Obituary of Orpha S Davis
Orpha S. Davis died peacefully on July 25, 2024 in Binghamton, NY, at Good Shepherd-Fairview Home where she lived and received compassionate care for the past 6 years. Born on November 20, 1922 in Shaffersville, PA, she was the daughter of John M. and Oneda Schirm. After graduating from Alexandrea High School in 1940 where at 5'1" she played on the basketball team, she attended Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing in Harrisburg, PA, graduating in 1943. In 1945, she married Harold "Bud" Davis, who her referred to as his "darling little star". They began a family and eventually settled in Endwell, NY. After Harold's untimely death in 1959, she found her home at Maine Endwell School as their head nurse, where she remained until her retirement. She enjoyed her bridge group of 50 years, gardening and crafting with her sisters. Lovingly known as Gramma to many, she was known for her Christmas cookies. She would begin the baking, usually with family at her side, in the fall making batches of at least 15 different varieties of confectionery. Not a single crumb was left after the holidays as she delivered, mailed, and boxed her delights for all who wanted them. Orpha is survived by her son Robert J. Davis and his wife Amanda, daughter-in-law Anne Davis, grandchildren Katherine Davis Hendrickson, Robert W. Davis, Allison Williams and Jolie Ortu. She was predeceased by her husband of 14 years, Harold "Bud" Davis, her sisters Mary and Helen, and her son John "Jake" Davis. Despite being widowed at a young age, she was able to successfully raise her two children and create a full and independent life, rich with friends and family. She was a woman of true grit. Gramma will be greatly missed by all who had the honor of knowing her. Interment will be private.
