Mary McGee Smith
Mary McGee Smith, 102, of Katonah, NY (formerly of Endicott, NY and Archbald, PA) died on Saturday, October 9, 2010, at the home of her daughter, Carol. She is the daughter of the late John and Winifred Gaffney McGee of Archbald, PA. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Jean Moore Smith of Carmel, NY; two daughters, Suzanne Outman of Owego, NY and Carol Smith of Katonah; eight grandchildren, Joseph (Karen) Smith, James (Karen) Smith, Catherine Vollmer, Maureen (Michael) Lavin, Carolyn Smith (Don Elsey), Patricia (John) Moore, James (Melissa) Outman, David (Jenny) Outman; 18 great-grandchildren; her brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Betty Conrad McGee of Archbald; and many beloved nieces and nephews for whom she was the favorite "Aunt Mary". In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Joseph Smith; her grandson, Eric Outman; her brothers, Francis, John, Joseph and Thomas McGee; and her sisters, Florence McGee, Winifred Bennett and Monica Mulrooney. She graduated from Archbald High School as salutatorian of her class, Stroudsburg Normal School from which she received a Teacher's Certificate, and from the State University of NY at Cortland from which she received her BS degree. She taught 5th grade in the Union-Endicott Central School District for 15 years, retiring in 1973. She loved teaching her fifth graders and enjoyed it when, years later, they would approach her at the mall or a restaurant to say hello. She also worked for many years at Burt's Department Store on the Avenue in Endicott. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Ambrose Church in Endicott, a member of its Altar and Rosary Society and its Over 50 Club. The family will receive friends at the Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home, 300 E. Main St., Endicott on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, October 14, at 10 a.m. at St. Ambrose Church. Interment will follow at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill, PA. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to St. Ambrose Church, 203 Washington Ave., Endicott, NY 13760.
