Christmas Eve, 2008
Having learned of Edna's passing just yesterday, I find myself thinking of you this special evening. In reading some of the information sent my way about Red I was struck, but not surprised, by the mention of your devotion to her, visiting her daily at Willow Point. I am reminded of one of the great lessons our family received from your father in our Little League days. My Dad, ever the teacher, trying to get his sons to have the same up-to-the-base fortitude, was always quoting your Dad: "Stand up to the base, Pauly. Up to the base, Pauly." In this year of St. Paul, I am greatful to have known one who has embodied the words so well. My best to you and your soon-to-be-married son. A lucky girl he'll have to carry all the gifts her husband received from his late mother, and devoted father into the marriage. My best to Harold and Louise, if they'll ever remember the gawky kid from Pearl Street who, since he didn't play the game well, wrote about it, a few times.
