Obituary of Velma Prentice

Velma M. Prentice (1921 - 2012) Binghamton: Velma M. Prentice, widow of Frank R. Prentice, went to be with the Lord, February 6, 2012. Velma and a twin sister were born in East Berkshire, NY on September 18, 1921. Daughter of Clifford and Mabel Evans. She was the sister of two brothers and four sisters. Velma was predeceased by her oldest brother, Irving Evans and her sisters, Carol Jones and Marian Hodge. She is survived by her brother, Norman Evans and wife, Joan as well as by her twin, Thelma Smith and her youngest sister, Doris Hoffman. Velma is also survived by her children, Jerry and wife, Pat of Spring, TX, Judith Jagger of Broken Arrow, OK, David Prentice of Seminole, FL and Eric Prentice of Forty Fort, PA. She was a grandmother of ten and great grandmother of six great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Margaret Gill of Windsor and by several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family lived in Maine, NY and were members of Maine Federated Church were Velma taught Sunday School for several years. She was also a Cub Scout Den Mother. Following a brief residence in California, where Frank continued his life-time IBM career, the family returned to a new home in Newark Valley. The lawn was festooned with several varieties of roses, some of which won Court Of Honor Blue Ribbons at the State Fair. In later years, Velma enjoyed planning entertainment for the East Side Senior Center in Binghamton and represented the local area in Scrabble competition in the New York Seniors Games. In keeping with Velma's wishes, calling hours will be held on Friday, 12-1pm at the Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home, 300 East Main St., Endicott where funeral services will follow at 1pm. Rev. Tim Dodd officiating. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
